Mapping and Geomatics
When implementing projects, mapping and geomatics are used to prepare various kinds of maps and manage georeferenced databases. These maps are used for reports, meetings, and to plan and monitor the status of projects. When producing these kinds of maps, it is important to illustrate all the challenges related to the project (when the project spans hundreds of kilometres, for instance), in a clear and understandable way using an appropriate system of legends.
Specific areas of intervention
Database creation and management
Integration, conversion, and management of field data
Georeferencing and digitization of paper plans and PDFs
Production of various map products (ex.: atlas, thematic maps, detailed maps)
Spatial or statistical analysis
Environmental maps of routes – linear projects
Real-time data output tools (ArcGIS Online)

Energy East Pipeline
The Energy East Pipeline was to be the largest pipeline in Canada, with a 4,600-km pipeline connecting Alberta to New Brunswick. In Quebec, the project included a 650-km pipeline, 10 pump stations, 2 delivery stations, 107 block valves, permanent access roads, as well as temporary installations and infrastructures. Groupe Conseil UDA produced hundreds of thematic maps to illustrate the pipeline route. These maps were used during information activities with the public and stakeholders (municipalities, MRCs, organizations, private owners, etc.) and during technical meetings with the project team to discuss various challenges. The maps were also used to support the studies and reports produced. Moreover, a project of this scale requires stringent management processes for the data collected via the use of a geodatabase.

Applied geomatics for Hydro-Québec
Mapping and geomatics entail spatial data management and the production of survey databases. Hydro-Québec partnered with Groupe Conseil UDA for occasional and long-term map production mandates. Because a significant amount of data generally needs to be presented, the challenge was to create a system of legends that did not overburden the maps produced.

Created and managed georeferenced databases
Integrated, converted, and managed data
Produced various map products in line with Hydro-Québec’s standards

Gazoduq Project
The Gazoduq project aimed to build a new 780-km pipeline to transport natural gas between the TC Énergie network in Ontario and GNL Québec’s future liquified natural gas complex in Saguenay. Group Conseil UDA was hired to act as the project’s main environmental advisor. Groupe Conseil UDA’s geomatics team was a keystone to the success of activities. Their expertise was leveraged to support field inventories and create tools designed for information and consultation sessions. They also helped produce myriad maps to support the overall project.

Supply Saguenay
Énergir is planning to build a pipeline to supply natural gas to a port industrial zone in Saguenay. Groupe Conseil UDA was mandated with preparing studies required for obtaining the authorizations necessary for the project. The tasks included carrying out various inventories to document the host environment, supporting Énergir’s information and consultation process, and drafting an environmental protection plan. Any major project that needs to comply with various regulatory processes requires support from geomatics experts to not only deliver the required maps, but also manage various data collected on site and from available georeferenced databases.

Environmental audit of the Mont-Royal Heritage Site
The City of Montreal wanted to carry out environmental audits on the Mont-Royal Heritage Site to update their data, guide their recommendations for landscaping and interventions, and facilitate their management processes. They also wanted updated information to help preserve and increase biodiversity on site. Support from Groupe Conseil UDA’s geomatics department was required to plan the plant inventories, identify the 400 quadrats, process the data collected on site, and assess its ecological value.
Services rendered
Supported the process of inventorying and identifying the quadrats
Managed a georeferenced database with thousands of entries
Produced numerous thematic maps

Tree inventory on Île Sainte-Hélène
In 2018, the Société du parc Jean-Drapeau mandated Groupe Conseil UDA to carry out an inventory of all the trees on Île Sainte-Hélène. More than 17,000 trees were assessed in three months and categorized according to their characteristics and condition. The goal was to identify dying trees and recommend a management plan to the Société. Groupe Conseil UDA’s geomatics department was involved in the project.
Services rendered
Provided support for inventory activities
Processed data collected in the field
Created a geodatabase with the location of all the trees inventoried
Carried out spatial and statistical analyses
Produced numerous thematic maps: occurrences according to species, diameter, condition, density of canopy, what actions should be prioritized, etc.

Expansion of the Sintra quarry located in Saint-Alphonse-de-Granby and Bromont
Sintra wanted to expand and deepen one of their quarries that has been in operation since 1970. Subject to the Regulation respecting sand pits and quarries, authorization was needed from the MELCC to proceed. A request for this authorization needed be supported by various sector studies including an environmental characterization, a hydrogeological study, a hydraulic study, and a noise study. In addition to the authorizations required from the MELCC, the government also required various elements to be mapped. Due to the size of the area (about 130 hectares), producing the maps required represented a significant challenge.
Services rendered
Provided support for the inventories
Processed data collected on site
Created a geodatabase
Produced numerous thematic maps with different scales to portray the elements required
